Greek Cicada
Oil and acrylic on canvas
I am fascinated by cicadas and their periodic lifecycle. Some of them appear above ground only every 17 years.
I see their resurrection from the earth, their progression to winged form and their song as a symbol of coming to creative bloom or, as Carl Jung puts it – individuation, i.e. wholeness in what we can accomplish, as an opposite to the triumph of the ego.
In Greek culture cicada symbolises resurrection and immortality; plus there is also a certain liminal aspect as they are capable of moving through the world’s portals.
